When the lake turns gray: 6 things to do near Truman Lake on a rainy day

Short answer: head for Kaysinger Bluff. The Pioneer Village, the Truman Dam Visitor Center, and downtown Warsaw give you a full, mostly-covered day off the water — and most of it is free.

A gray sky at the lake doesn't have to mean a wasted trip. Warsaw sits between Truman Lake and the Osage arm of Lake of the Ozarks, and some of its best experiences have nothing to do with a boat. Here's how to spend a rainy day — kids included.

1. Step into the 1840s at the Pioneer Village

Wander the log cabins, schoolhouse, and blacksmith shop on the bluff. Admission is free, the buildings are covered, and there's a real story in every corner. It's our pick for families.

2. Take in the view from the Truman Dam Visitor Center

Right next door, the Class-A visitor center has interactive exhibits on the dam, the lake, and local wildlife — all indoors, all free.

Looking for the rest? Here's the quick list:

  • Tour the Lost Valley Fish Hatchery and its exhibits
  • Walk the historic Joe Dice swinging bridge at Drake Harbor
  • Browse the shops and cafés in downtown Warsaw
  • Catch a bite of Ozark barbecue while the rain passes
A gray day on the bluff is the best day to hear the village's stories — fewer crowds, more time at the forge.
